academy project
date: 2011
assignment: transformation of a gerrit rietveld house (1953),
location: bosch en duin, near to utrecht, the netherlands
Starting as a cabinet maker, dutch architect gerrit rietveld
learned to form space from elemental composition.
according to rietveld, any creation must change the perspective
of those viewing it. a designer should design in such manner that
elements like mass, space or form adjust to the finished creation.
the transformation of the house is a reinterpretation of composing
space from elements. instead of using separate architectural
elements like wall, floor and roof, the decision is made to use volumes.
by adding extra volumes to the house the architectural space tends
to liquefy; the transition between ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ seems to vanish
and starts to act more in a more suggestive than concrete sense.
